Take taxis rather than walking in El Bosque after dark. The area is not dangerous by default, but streets are poorly lit and not designed for pedestrians. Reception can call reliable drivers.

Plan business meetings in Mamonal outside peak truck hours. Leaving before seven in the morning or after nine avoids the worst congestion on the Mamonal road.

About Bazurto: go with someone who knows the market, carry little cash and no jewellery, and try a plate of fried fish with coconut rice and patacones. It is the most authentic meal in Cartagena.

Use the rooftop terrace at sunset. The view over the bay, with ships in the port and the towers of Bocagrande on the horizon, is impressive and rarely crowded.

Keep evenings free for the walled city at least once. Taxis to the centre are quick, and dinner in Getsemaní followed by a walk on the walls makes a business trip memorable.

Bring light clothing and sun protection. Even for business, Cartagena's heat and humidity are intense, and a hat and sunscreen are useful during site visits.

Confirm late check out in advance if your flight is in the evening. Checkout is at noon, and staff can often store luggage or extend the room for a fee, useful when the last meeting ends in the afternoon.
